Suit ≠ Suit™ Who do you trust with your money?
A correct dress style and look that fits you as a person and by that creates value in association is what it is all about when we talk money. A few weeks ago I saw again a connection between dress style and success.
We see in the picture Mr. V. Muller (r) who was looking from investments from Mr. Pang Qinhua (l). I think the dress style should be different if you want to convince an investor. I say this because I think Mr. Muller is not looking like a person I would trust my money with when I look at his dress style.
Why?
1. Look at the quality of the suit and construction. You can see that he is wearing a fused suit instead of one with a stitched canvas. You can see that the fabric is bubbling due to the fact that the suit was not properly dry cleaned. If you do not look neat and well taken care of then I ask myself how you would take care of my money? Keep in mind that especially in Asia cleanliness and hygiene are important elements of the business culture.
2. Fit is the top priority in the acquisition of a proper suit. The base are the neck and shoulders. We see that the suit is not made for his body and so becomes too wide for his torso. This further effects the whole fit and you simply loose that suited silhouette that is globally recognized as successful.
3. The colors. I like that color of the fabric since it gives a formal look and by that gives the opportunity to go from pedestrian to prince with your shirt and tie combination. What the Faux-pas here is, is that the color of the tie and shirt are the same so I cannot distinguish them and my eye is being drawn to this baby blue mass.
On the contrary our Chinese friend seems to be up to date with his dress style and evokes the associations most suited for a business leader.
A classic blue plain suit so he radiates trust. That is the effect of midnight blue. Combined with a natural shoulder construction to follow his body posture it’s a more than correct fit. Due to this dark blue suit his lighter face is the contrast between that and his hair. A good business look is the one that draws the eye of the beholder to the face, so we look each other in the eye. The collar of his shirt is a semi cut away, very neutral and good for every occasion.
